EmoViz Storybook - Visualizing Emotions From Storybooks

While children feel all types of emotions from a young age, they may not always understand these emotions. Using books and stories rich with emotions is one way to help children understand emotions and learn appropriate words to express what they feel. The goal of this project is to develop an interactive mobile application that can visualize emotion words or cues from storybooks. First, the visualization can be provided at the word level in which an emotion lexicon can be used to identify and mark emotion words in the story. For each emotion word detected, a relevant emoji will be shown as a visual aid to help children understand the emotion word-visual mapping. Second, visualizations can be created at the book level in which the overall emotion words found in the book can be scored and visualized to help parents search and retrieve storybooks for their children. Furthermore, parents can upload the storybooks that suitable for their children to the application.
